Chennai, Oct. 21: Life-threatening consequences await patients if ambulances fail to reach hospitals on time. With water-logged roads, nonfunctioning signals, and broken trees obstructing the way, a journey that would originally take 10 minutes to complete now takes at least an hour.

 

Jams have worsened in the city as a result of poor traffic management and lack of preparedness to handle the intensity with which the monsoons have hit this year. Cars, bikes, buses and autos manoeuver through traffic, occupying every lane and sidewalk resulting in accidents.

Chennai, Oct. 30: Efforts to keep the city clean of roadside garbage are now more visible after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his Mission Cleanup last month in Bangalore however, without an improvement in the conservancy worker’s conditions.

 

Street cleaners work in two shifts – from 6 am to 2.30 pm and 9 pm to 4 am. They are paid a monthly salary ranging from Rs. 5500 to 7000, and are given consumer items including air conditioners and television sets.

Chennai, Oct. 23: With an average 15% drop in sales, firecracker dealers across the city are finding it difficult to get rid of their stock the day after Diwali. They attribute this fall in demand to the monsoons, growing environmental consciousness, and the availability of China-made firecrackers in the market.
